Back to Round 2

Had a couple of slight discrepancies with the recalculation of Round 2 results - they will probably continue to be redone and redone, but I've thought something more of a formula for when the teams draw. Basically if the teams in that place have won, they go up and lost, they go down.

This is the reordered results - not a huge difference for the round, the main difference is in the lower ranked teams, but that could add up as the season goes on.

O'Higgins
Cobreloa
Palestino
Universidad Católica
Iquique
Rangers
Santiago Wanderers

It seems to have made quite a difference to the overall list though. Could be some mistakes in the calculations. These will be done quite a few times before making a full release. So this is the new order.

Power Rankings - Round 3

Time for round 3. I'm also hoping that this will get easier and faster as I get accustomed to the system. I haven't found an automated way, though I haven't been looking at it much. It will work just fine if I input the data.

All the stats and scores are from Soccerway - it has a nice system where you go to the tournament and view it by round.

Looks like I had a nice error though and the round 2 data was not saved. That was a good trick.

Round 2 was far more straightforward, with very few draws. I am leaving the draws to the end in the calculations, then winners are rewarded if a draw needs to be slotted in - for example, Barnechea and Deportes Concepción played out a draw, so Naval and Santiago Morning were both rewarded.

The byes in the Primera B, not sure if they will make a difference - I am leaving them in the place for the moment, then adjusting if necessary.

Anyway. For the round, here are the rankings

Sport/Life Power Rankings - Chilean Primera Division, Round 1

I am creating a "power ranking". I want to be able to use it for different sports in different countries, but I'm starting with the Chilean football.

In here, I will write about the process. I've been thinking a while about the IFFHS or whatever they are rankings and you don't get to see too much into how they are actually done.

I have decided to begin with the Primera A and B - using the 2012 Annual table for each as a basis - this means Huachipato were not rewarded for winning the comp in 2012, moreso their average form. Puerto Montt were replaced with Copiapó - the relegation battles were also not taken into account.

The basic concept of the power ranking is your last game could lead to huge jumps in the ranking - if you beat someone well above, you take their place. The overall ranking is calculated by your total points (less points the better - first is one point, worst in the B is 32 points).

Some notes to begin. The U de Chile vs Wanderers match was rescheduled - La U's loss sees them have a huge drop in the power rankings. None of the top 4 teams from the table had victory. Wanderers had a big boost in the rankings. Católica were boosted an extra place due to losses above, while Colo Colo dropped one place.

Everton and Ñublense had a draw. My current plan is to cut the difference between the two sides, then the away team goes higher. These chaotic results have some troubles with that, particular the large amount of draws.

The key complications were the draw between San Marcos de Arica and Huachipato as well as the losses for Colo Colo and Universidad de Chile.

The large change with Arica saw a big shift in the number with some benefits for teams in the middle of the table. The Primera B teams were straightforward, with easier results to calculate. Teams beating the relegated teams were the biggest winners.

I am not sure if I should include the original ranking (ie the place at end of 2012) in the calculations. I guess I can calculate both and figure it out. I am trying to figure out a way to automate all this for taking it to other sports, but haven't got to that yet. This is the first round so I will see how it goes over the next rounds.
